  Harlow Citizen - 18th February 2008

One of the great things about being an MP is being able to honour people in Harlow who have served their country. So imagine how pleased I was when 19 veterans’ badges arrived in my office last week, the result of a year-long campaign to ensure that people from Harlow who have served in the armed forces are recognised.

In my eyes, there is no greater service than that of the WWII veterans. So I will be presenting the badge to the 19 veterans at a reception in the Harlow Civic Centre on 29th February.

I held my first reception last year after several of my constituents heard about the new badges and came forward asking if they were eligible. It was a great event, with many people recognised for their service during the war. Family members came, together with representatives from the community and voluntary sector and veterans groups. I wanted to do an even better event this year to ensure that everyone has a chance to meet with those who have had similar experiences and in a small way here in Harlow recognise and honour veterans’ commitment and duty.

The Veterans Service Lapel Badge was introduced in 2005 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The badge design was developed by the Government in consultation with veterans organisations and is designed to be worn on civilian attire.

Former military personnel who served in the armed forces up to 31st December 1959, and their widows, are eligible for the lapel badges. If think you might be eligible and would be interested in attending a similar event next year, contact me on 0207 219 3443 and I will send you an application form.
