• We introduced the first ever National Minimum Wage – something Labour has been pressing for since Keir Hardie began campaigning for it in the 1890s. It’s benefited more than 1.5 million workers, 70% of whom are women and part-time employees.

• The Employment Relations Act 1999 brought in new rights for all working people including greater protection against unfair dismissal and against victimisation for whistle-blowing; new rights for part-time workers on pay, pensions, holidays and benefits, minimum holiday and maximum working time.  The ERA also established for the first time the statutory right to trade union recognition. 

• We are promoting equality in the workplace by outlawing discrimination on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief. Legislation to outlaw age discrimination at work will be in place by 2006.
