Highway Robbery: Will the County Council Provide The Funds We Need To Tackle The Road Problems in Harlow?

I recently met with Cllr Rodney Bass, the Portfolio Holder for Transport and Highways at Essex County Council to discuss investment plans for Harlow’s roads. Cllr Bass is the Councillor who has
lead responsibility for this issue. He is the key decision maker on all road issues that affect our town.
After several years campaigning to secure more money from the County Council for our roads and pavements, I was delighted to learn that Cllr Bass was submitting an internal £5 million bid at
the Council for capital investment in Harlow’s highways to fix some of our road problems over the next two years.
The very fact that Cllr Bass submitted such a large bid confirms that the County Council now accept what I have been saying in my campaigns for many years: that Harlow has serious road and pavement
repair needs and we have not been getting our fair share of Council Tax back from Essex County Council to do the job properly.
The bid was recently considered by the County Council Cabinet who decided to award us an extra £1.9 million of capital funding. This will help with some of the problems but it is far short
of what we need to resolve them all. So we need to keep campaigning for more funds in future years and keep an eye on the County Council to ensure they spend the money properly to meet local
priorities.
Around 75% of all our Council Tax goes to the County Council. As a local resident you therefore have an important voice to add to this campaign.
If you want to support the ongoing campaign for more investment in our roads please e-mail me with a mesasge of support for the "Highway
Robbery" campaign. I'll keep you updated on progress in the coming weeks and months.
